Hidden, perhaps, in plain sight after moonlighting between G League star and sparingly-used NBA veteran, Jay Huff couldn’t have reasonably made himself more visible if he tried during October 26, 2024’s breakout showcase. Natural in his chemistry alongside the Memphis Grizzlies’ stars as if they had done it for years, Huff instinctively peels from the 3-point corner towards the rim, granting his teammate an outlet upon recognizing multiple blue jerseys. Later admitting to having his at-the-rim attack be unplanned, Huff merely trusts his compulsion, reversing his torso entirely for a highflying, yet on-the-fly poster jam over a pair of Orlando Magic defenders. Prior to his much-discussed breakthrough in the Grizzlies’ threads, Huff had just 31 NBA appearances to his name over a four-teams-in-four-seasons span. Both an early-season feel-good story, and, seemingly the latest in Memphis’ long line of unearthed gems, Huff helped arrange a home-opening win over the Orlando Magic on October 26, 2024. Earning a walk-off interview for his standout play, Huff turned in 18 points (on a near-perfect seven-of-nine shooting), two rebounds, and three 3-pointers in 19 minutes.
