Even after being given a few months to grow acclimated to the tendencies of his new, dynamic Argentina-born guard, the San Antonio Spurs’ head coach reasoned that when Manu Ginóbili took the floor, he wasn’t quite ever sure what to expect. One could imagine that opponents — and in particular, the Los Angeles Lakers during Game 1 of 2003’s Western Conference Semifinals — would second that assessment without nitpick. Making the safe, seemingly-controlled play, Ginóbili turns to ‘ol reliable, delivering a post entry pass to his Hall of Fame-bound teammate before vacating the area. Suddenly in position for an advantageous handoff situation after Los Angeles neglects to follow, the creative, free-flowing Ginóbili prepares the unthinkable, navigating into an across-the-rim flush over a pair of helpless purple jerseys. Soon to receive plenty of experience slaying superteams, both on the NBA and Olympic circuit over the ensuing year, Ginóbili introduced himself on May 5, 2003 as the newest threat to the Lakers’ four-peat aspirations. A cheat code along a San Antonio second unit that commanded a 28-4 bench points edge, Ginobili helped ensure victory through 15 points — 14 in the second half — six rebounds, two assists, four steals, and three 3-pointers.
