A literal “underdog” from the moment his 5-foot-3 frame first crossed NBA lines, Muggsy Bogues spoke from experience in recognizing that survival against the 60-win New York Knicks would require the Charlotte Hornets finding “all the edges” they could. Elevating his game to proportion for his 14-year career’s biggest series, the lionhearted guard delivered impact through the expected approach: two-way contributions from every edge of the floor. Left uncovered with the ball heading his way during a critical possession in double overtime, Bogues utilizes a heads-up play, faking a pass to eliminate a defender before burying a bucket to break the 106-106 tie in the final minute. Bogues would serve as the game’s ultimate hero by scoring the final four points, supplying the NBA’s newly-expanded Hornets with its first semifinal round win in franchise history. A disruptive presence to the Knicks’ plans in every way possible, Bogues recorded 16 points (on 6-of-10 shooting), along with four rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and an instrumental role in quieting New York’s offense over the final two-and-a-half minutes on May 14, 1993.
