Unlikely to have shaken completely free of the nerves associated with his professional career’s first-ever regular-season game, Risacher rises nonetheless, turning a catch-and-shoot opportunity into a celebratory occasion. Meeting the competitive eye of LaMelo Ball — already solidified as one of the Association’s most innovative offensive talents — Sheppard matches the high-profile head-to-head with creativity of his own through the help of a screen-and-roll. Escaping Seth Curry’s potential help with a calmed switch-hand dribble and maneuver towards the floor's middle, Sheppard clears his path for an uncontested, through-the-lane jumper, checking off his first-ever NBA bucket. The 2024 No. 3 pick rewarded his coaches’ trust with a serviceable first showing, even given the Charlotte Hornets’ come-from-behind victory over his Houston Rockets to open regular-season play. The Orlando Magic’s No. 1 pick won’t soon forget his first game against the Detroit Pistons, and neither will Cory Joseph after Banchero put the 12-year veteran on a poster with a demonstrative dunk. Banchero made 11 of his 18 field goal attempts for 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks, cementing one of the best debuts from a No. 1 pick in the past half-century. The Pistons won the October 19, 2022 game, but the Magic left Motown feeling fantastic about their new franchise cornerstone.

The first six minutes of Jalen Williams’ career turned out to be pretty perfect. After the Oklahoma City Thunder made him the 12th pick in the draft, Williams rewards their faith, passing up a three-point attempt to instead take a run right at Karl-Anthony Towns. Williams puts the ball on the floor with his left hand, driving hard toward the basket and getting the best of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ three-time All-Star with a baseline floater. It took all of one game for Jabari Smith Jr. to make an immediate impact with the Houston Rockets. A few months after Houston made him the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 rookie rewards his team’s faith in him by showcasing his deft shooting touch from long range. Against the Atlanta Hawks in his first professional game, Smith Jr. crosses halfcourt, takes a pass from a teammate and without hesitation rises up from way behind the arc to drain one of his three triples. The Rockets may have lost the game, but they left Atlanta feeling confident about the future after Smith Jr. posted 17 points and seven rebounds on October 19, 2022.

Put it on his head, rook! LaMelo Ball hits the offensive glass hard after a Charlotte Hornets miss, times a jump perfectly and bangs home a one-handed put-back slam on Indiana Pacers center Domantas Sabonis. Ball’s squad would hold on for the January 29, 2021 win.

Creating a switch in a pick-and-roll, Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham works his handle, taking the league’s reigning MVP for a ride with a sharp behind-the-back before finishing the play with a three-point bucket. Against a top-tier Denver Nuggets team, Cunningham showed why he was the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, finishing with 34 points on 14-of-26 shooting, adding eight rebounds, eight assists, four blocks and two steals on January 25, 2022.

Salute to all the rim protectors who put their body on the line to defend the hoop... but some dunks aren’t meant to be stopped. LaMelo Ball's deceptive capabilities are elite. The Charlotte Hornets guard loses his defender with the very real threat of a cross-court pass, then attacks the hoop and switches hands mid-layup around Atlanta Hawks rim protector Clint Capela. Ball dropped 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists - his first career triple-double - in the January 9, 2021 contest.

Houston Rockets rookie Alperen Şengün has the passing ability to allow an offense to flow around him rather than through him. Exemplifying such, Şengün receives an entry pass, then immediately hits a cutting Josh Christopher in stride with a fancy behind-the-head drop-off for an easy two. The rising star had a career night with 27 points and seven rebounds in a 115-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on March 26, 2022.

It’s not just the vision — it’s the ability to pull off the unthinkable that makes LaMelo Ball one of the league’s most mesmerizing talents. The Charlotte Hornets rookie wastes no time getting back into the swing of things after a month-long absence, corralling a rebound against the Detroit Pistons then hitting teammate Miles Bridges in stride with a fullcourt, under-handed pass on May 1st, 2021.

The masterfully creative Charlotte Hornets rookie catches a transition pass from a teammate, loses one defender with a pump fake, spins around to reset his footing then pulls up for a triple in a March 13, 2021 contest against the Toronto Raptors. 

It often takes even the most talented rookies time to adjust to the rigors of the NBA — but not Paolo Banchero. In one of the more offensively-explosive inaugural campaigns in recent history, the Orlando Magic rookie gives the Oklahoma City Thunder more than they can handle when he gets behind the defense and goes toe-to-toe with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander before earning a gravity-defying throwdown. Banchero stuffed the box score with team-highs of 25 points and seven assists while also chipping in eight rebounds for the Magic in the team’s 126-115 win on January 4, 2023.

Expected to showcase the silky smooth offensive game and poise he showed off at Alabama eventually, Brandon Miller wasted little time answering the call as early as Day 1. Embroiled in a close game against a division rival, Miller fuels a strong Charlotte Hornets finish with an unguardable stepback triple in the fourth quarter. Miller’s contributions -- 13 points, including eight in the final frame -- were essential in his squad’s opening night victory on October 25, 2023.

Orlando Magic first-year forward Franz Wagner finds an angle on a drive, then tears straight through the paint for a monster two-handed dunk. Though celebrated widely for his combination of size and court vision, don’t underestimate Cade Cunningham’s command of the rock. Surrounded by teammates unafraid to push the pace in transition, the 20-year-old Detroit Pistons point forward calls for an outlet pass in the backcourt then laces a one-handed bounce pass up the floor to a streaking Saddiq Bey for two. Cunningham finished the January 30, 2022 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals.

Crafty scorers put the ball in the basket, whatever it takes. Checked at the elbow in his first NBA contest, Jaime Jaquez Jr. gets his defender to bite with a pump fake, then lasers in on the cup and finishes the play with an acrobatic reverse layup. The first-year wing went a perfect 3-for-3 in his Miami Heat debut on October 25, 2023, adding two dimes and two steals in the process.

Positioned to make an instant impact with the size and athleticism he brings to the Dallas Mavericks, it was Dereck Lively II’s motor down the stretch that shined in his debut. Embroiled in a tight, fourth-quarter battle between division rivals, Lively II battles for position on the glass with fellow rookie Victor Wembanyama, deflects the ball to a teammate, then loops back around to the hoop to throw down a putback slam off a miss. Lively II recorded a double-double in his first game as a pro, dropping 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added 10 boards in the October 25, 2023 win.

Already effective picking apart defenses and manufacturing scoring opportunities, Keyonte George is an outright problem with NBA court spacing. Checked at half court in his first professional contest, George zips past his defender and floats through the paint for an untouched layup.
