Amidst all of the excitement surrounding perhaps the most highly-anticipated NBA rookie season post-2003, Victor Wembanyama, in short time, has already become a man of many nicknames, adjectives, and superlatives. For some, “Wemby” or “The Extraterrestrial” do the trick; for others, perhaps “the future of the NBA” fits the bill more demonstratively. Yet, given the many acts that defined Wembanyama’s 2023-24, perhaps there’s room for one more: “the first player to ever …” Perfectly befitting of a player with a 7-foot-4 frame, an 8-foot wingspan, and a skillset built for every need from one-through-five, Wembanyama’s impact knew no limits in Year One. The immediate accolades included becoming the sixth-ever unanimous Rookie of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year runner-up, and First Team All-Defense selection. Though, across a 71-game showcase unlike anything ever seen, Wembanyama’s reach also allowed for 10-block triple-doubles, rare five-by-five games, and just the league’s second instance of 200 blocks and 100 3-pointers. Approximately 12 seconds into his check-in with a fired-up State Farm Arena cheerfully awaiting his every move, Zaccharie Risacher hustles the open floor, ensuring his All-Star floor general of much-needed coverage in transition. Unlikely to have shaken completely free of the nerves associated with his professional career’s first-ever regular-season game, Risacher rises nonetheless, turning a catch-and-shoot opportunity into a celebratory occasion. The talented Spaniard, as he did throughout both the preseason and Summer League, flashed both creativity and productivity during October 23, 2024’s milestone showdown against the Brooklyn Nets. Meeting the competitive eye of LaMelo Ball — already solidified as one of the Association’s most innovative offensive talents — Sheppard matches the high-profile head-to-head with creativity of his own through the help of a screen-and-roll. Escaping Seth Curry’s potential help with a calmed switch-hand dribble and maneuver towards the floor's middle, Sheppard clears his path for an uncontested, through-the-lane jumper, checking off his first-ever NBA bucket. The 2024 No. 3 pick rewarded his coaches’ trust with a serviceable first showing, even given the Charlotte Hornets’ come-from-behind victory over his Houston Rockets to open regular-season play. Banchero made 11 of his 18 field goal attempts for 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks, cementing one of the best debuts from a No. 1 pick in the past half-century. After the Oklahoma City Thunder made him the 12th pick in the draft, Williams rewards their faith, passing up a three-point attempt to instead take a run right at Karl-Anthony Towns. Williams puts the ball on the floor with his left hand, driving hard toward the basket and getting the best of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ three-time All-Star with a baseline floater. Adding Jaden Ivey to a Detroit Pistons team loaded with young talent has brought basketball excitement back to the Motor City. Despite it being his first career NBA game, the rookie point guard looked at ease in his debut against the Orlando Magic. When a steal lands in his hands, the lightning-quick Ivey is off to the races leading the counterattack, dropping an underhanded scoop pass to teammate Saddiq Bey for a transition layup less than two minutes into his NBA career. Ivey played with the poise of a veteran, tallying 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 113-109 Pistons victory on October 19, 2022.

It took all of one game for Jabari Smith Jr. to make an immediate impact with the Houston Rockets. A few months after Houston made him the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 rookie rewards his team’s faith in him by showcasing his deft shooting touch from long range. Against the Atlanta Hawks in his first professional game, Smith Jr. crosses halfcourt, takes a pass from a teammate and without hesitation rises up from way behind the arc to drain one of his three triples. The Rockets may have lost the game, but they left Atlanta feeling confident about the future after Smith Jr. posted 17 points and seven rebounds on October 19, 2022.

It’s always nice to start your NBA career off with a win, especially if you play a big role in the victory. Jalen Duren immediately checks both things off his list for the Detroit Pistons, in one fell swoop corralling a steal and firing an outlet pass up the court to teammate Cory Joseph, who then waits a beat before hitting a cutting Duren in stride. The 13th overall pick in the draft finishes the play by posterizing a helpless Orlando Magic defender. Duren gave his new squad a big lift off the bench, tallying 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes, allowing the Pistons to open the season with a 113-109 win on October 19, 2022.

Despite not suiting up during his lone college campaign last season, Shaedon Sharpe was more than ready for his NBA debut. The Portland Trail Blazers’ prized rookie shows no evidence of rust against the Sacramento Kings, casually shaking off his defender and draining a corner triple off an inbound pass. Sharpe made a major impact in just 16 minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points — shooting 3-for-3 on three-pointers — and adding two rebounds in a 115-108 win on October 19, 2022.

The San Antonio Spurs have always gravitated toward unselfish offensive players who bring a gritty intensity to the defensive end. Jeremy Sochan fits the blueprint like a glove and is already fitting seamlessly into the Spurs’ system. With the ball in his hands, Sochan passes off to a teammate before dropping down into the post and immediately taking it back to deposit for an and-one opportunity at the rim. The rookie forward made a solid first impression, posting four points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Charlotte Hornets on October 19, 2022.

The first-year guard finished with 12 points and four assists in his NBA debut against the Denver Nuggets on December 23, 2020.

Luka Dončić coming off of a pick-and-roll is the last thing you want to see when playing the Dallas Mavericks. In a play typically saved for All-Star weekend, Dončić freezes the defense with a behind-the-back combo straight into a cross-court pass, finding Kristaps Porzingis for a crucial three-pointer on the left wing. Dončić led the way with 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds during the Mavericks’ 116-106 triumph over the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2021.

LaMelo Ball has been finding ways to get his shot off for years and that hasn't changed at the NBA level. The masterfully creative Charlotte Hornets rookie catches a transition pass from a teammate, loses one defender with a pump fake, spins around to reset his footing then pulls up for a triple in a March 13, 2021 contest against the Toronto Raptors. 

Forget everything you know about conventional basketball when Nikola Jokić hits the floor. The mesmerizing Denver Nuggets center defies positional norms yet again on January 7, 2022, seamlessly carrying the rock the length of the floor against the Sacramento Kings, then hitting JaMychal Green in stride with a casual no-look, one-handed entry feed. Jokić finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the win.

An electric package of athleticism and offense, Scoot Henderson is well-equipped to take the reins of the Portland Trail Blazers’ new backcourt. The No. 3 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft flashes a sign of the production to come with a quick-release – and borderline untouchable – floater for the first basket of his NBA career. Henderson finished his October 25, 2023 debut with 11 points and four assists.

No matter the matchup, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards has proven he’s confident he can score in any situation. Despite giving up size in an isolation against a Denver Nuggets big, Edwards takes him for a dance, working a mix of between-the-legs, in-and-out crossovers and hesitations before getting enough space to drain a stepback three-pointer. That was the story of the night, as Edwards exploded for 38 points, 10 three-pointers and five rebounds in a 124-107 win on December 15, 2021.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Dallas Mavericks guard Reggie Bullock provides a lesson in persistence here, missing on his first three-point attempt before draining it on his second chance to send the crowd into a frenzy with a clutch bucket. Bullock had a highlight game with 20 points, four rebounds and four triples to help his squad outlast the Philadelphia 76ers in a 107-98 win on February 4, 2022.

Relentless on the glass and defensive end, Ausar Thompson didn’t waste time leaving an impression on his new ball club. Just minutes into his first regular season game with the Detroit Pistons, Thompson deflects a Tyler Herro shot attempt off the backboard. It’s hard to disrupt the smooth, even-keeled approach Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane brings to the table. Bane rips through his defender on the perimeter and reverses back with a spin dribble into a driving slam with one hand. Memphis’s talented second-year guard scored 29 points and pulled down nine boards in the team’s 97-90 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on December 4, 2021.

Checked at the elbow in his first NBA contest, Jaime Jaquez Jr. gets his defender to bite with a pump fake, then lasers in on the cup and finishes the play with an acrobatic reverse layup. The first-year wing went a perfect 3-for-3 in his Miami Heat debut on October 25, 2023, adding two dimes and two steals in the process.

Positioned to make an instant impact with the size and athleticism he brings to the Dallas Mavericks, it was Dereck Lively II’s motor down the stretch that shined in his debut. Embroiled in a tight, fourth-quarter battle between division rivals, Lively II battles for position on the glass with fellow rookie Victor Wembanyama, deflects the ball to a teammate, then loops back around to the hoop to throw down a putback slam off a miss. Lively II recorded a double-double in his first game as a pro, dropping 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added 10 boards in the October 25, 2023 win.

Any time he sets foot on the court, Amen Thompson puts pressure on the defense. After running his own defender off a high screen beyond the arc, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft drives straight to the cup, catches a help-side defender off-guard and throws down a memorable first dunk. The Houston Rockets rookie finished the October 25, 2023 debut contest with eight points and five rebounds.

Devin Booker has made his name as one of the NBA’s most proficient three-level scorers. In the 2021-22 season, he’s also playing passing lanes and stealing the ball at a career rate. In a cat-and-mouse game, the Phoenix Suns All-Star guard makes himself skinny to fight through a dribble handoff before using his intuition to turn back and get a steal for a reverse fastbreak jam. Booker ended with 18 points in a Phoenix Suns 112-100 win on November 2, 2021.

The five-time All-Star blasts down the lane with three power dribbles and finishes through contact while also earning a trip to the charity stripe. His steady play (10 points and seven rebounds) helped spark a 95-78 blowout against the Miami Heat on November 4, 2021.

Dorian Finney-Smith has carved out a role as a blossoming 3-and-D contributor for the Dallas Mavericks, but if you give him a free runway to the rim, don’t be surprised to end up on an autographed poster. Finney-Smith, not afraid to attack a hard closeout and get to the rim, did a little bit of everything on January 14, 2022, dropping 13 points in a substantial win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
