After gathering a loose ball with a smooth behind-the-back dribble, the high-flying New Jersey Nets swingman heads straight to the bucket, bounces off iconic Miami Heat shot blocker Alonzo Mourning and still manages to throw down an instant classic dunk of the year candidate. Carter finished with 32 points and the latest entry in a rich portfolio of unforgettable dunks in the November 7, 2005 contest.

What happens when one of planet Earth greatest dunkers meets one of its most celebrated rim protectors for a battle through the skies? The NBA’s expansive highlight reels prove them to be evenly-matched clashes — so long the dunker involved isn’t Vince Carter. Illustrating his in-air greatness one maneuver at a time in Year One, the Toronto Raptors swingman sets up shop atop the high post, floating past Chris Crawford with a first step at breakneck speed. Reasonably unbothered by the respected, 7-foot-2 challenge immediately rotating his way, Carter springs through the air, outhanging Hall of Fame defender Dikembe Mutombo for a forceful one-handed facial, following it up with a confident staredown thereafter. Steph Curry is “an electric player off the dribble” who “can do it in any way.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season from his former teammate, the Golden State Warriors superstar guard pushes the ball up the court and lulls his defender to sleep before hitting a long crossover and blowing past him to take it straight to the cup and loft a layup over the outstretched arm of another challenger at the hoop. Steph had 27 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in a 117-109 win over the Sacramento Kings on October 24, 2021.

Morant shined under California’s bright lights with a 28-point and eight-assist performance to power Memphis to a 120-114 win on October 23, 2021.

Scottie Barnes is a problem. The Toronto Raptors rookie flashes his do-it-all talent in this possession, taking his defender off the dribble, getting to his spot inside the paint and floating a lefty finish that finds the bottom of the net. League MVP for a reason.” Kevin Durant narrates one from his favorite plays of the season from the game-changing Denver Nuggets center as Jokić gets open for an inbound pass, catches it at the top of the perimeter, quickly squares up and fires a high-flying triple over the Portland Trail Blazers’ Jusuf Nurkić. The reigning MVP notched 28 points and flirted with a triple double in an emphatic win at home on November 14, 2021.

The pressure of your first NBA bucket can be immense — especially when you’re the first overall pick. Detroit Pistons 2021 draftee Cade Cunningham catches a pass at the arc and immediately blows by his defender and through the lane to lay one in with his left. Detroit walked away with the win in the rookie’s NBA debut on October 30, 2021.

When Anthony Edwards gets out in transition, “there’s nothing you can do to stop him.” KD narrates ones of his top plays from Edwards this season as the Minnesota Timberwolves guard drops a swift in-and-out crossover combo to get by the initial defender, then takes no prisoners at the rim with a dynamic dunk over the last line of defense. Minnesota’s budding star had a huge night in 40 minutes of action against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 25, 2021: 28 points, nine rebounds and three dimes.

In his short time as a Charlotte Hornets star, LaMelo Ball has proven there’s no situation he can’t make a highlight out of. Mixing hustle, IQ, and creativity into one play, Ball tips the loose ball to himself before being met by a Milwaukee Bucks defender, then, without hesitation, fires a behind-the-back, on-the-money bounce pass to his big man for an easy reverse jam. Ball’s box score was equally brilliant, as the All-Star guard chipped in 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a 114-106 win over the defending champs on January 8, 2022.

There are three-point shooters who change games, and three-point shooters who change the game. Steph Curry is definitively the latter. In a home opener to kick off another potential MVP season, the Golden State Warriors guard pushes the ball up the court and heaves it to a teammate in the corner. Curry then chases his own pass and calls for the ball back to sink a high-flying, catch-and-shoot triple. The seven-time All-Star hit his first 10 field goals of the night on October 21, 2021, while pouring in 25 of his 45 points in the first quarter alone.

At the heart of the Brooklyn Nets’ unforgettable push to contend for a title is nine-time All-Star and franchise catalyst Kevin Durant. Durant runs the floor as his teammates work in masterful lockstep to recover a steal against the Cleveland Cavaliers then rises up to throw down an off-glass alley-oop from teammate Mike James. Durant finished the May 16, 2021 contest with 23 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists.

Donovan Mitchell is “one of the best scorers in the league” and his signature step-back is “elite.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season, Mitchell disguises a strong drive to the rim, then crosses back beyond the arc before splashing a triple over the outstretched arms of the defender. The Utah Jazz go-to guy finished with 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a November 11, 2021 matchup with the Indiana Pacers.

LaMelo Ball has the length and awareness to be a problem in this league for a long time. The Charlotte Hornets rookie blows by his Oklahoma City Thunder defender on the perimeter, attacks the hoop and finishes with his off-hand for his first career bucket on December 26, 2020.

A tantalizing combination of skill and size since the moment he appeared on the basketball radar, Chet Holmgren’s NBA debut with the Oklahoma City Thunder did not disappoint. Checked by a veteran big in the corner, Holmgren feigns a post move before pivoting into a picturesque turnaround jumper. Holmgren finished his October 25, 2023 debut with 11 points, four boards and three assists.

Running the pick-and-roll with LeBron James sometimes appears so easy that it might as well be a cheat code. The 19-time All-Star shares the wealth at home against the Washington Wizards, bringing the ball across halfcourt before gaining access to the lane courtesy of a helpful screen. James baits the defense into focusing on him, but instead of taking the shot himself he drops off a smooth between-the-legs bounce pass to a cutting Thomas Bryant for a two-handed throwdown. James scored a game-high 33 points while adding seven rebounds and nine assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119-117 victory on December 18, 2022.

Ja Morant isn’t messing around this season. The young superstar continues to raise his game, and lift his team to new heights. In this play of the year contender, Morant shows off his supernatural, jump out of the gym hops as he tracks down and perfectly times the two-handed, soaring block from behind. Morant contributed 16 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and that career highlight block in the 127-119 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on January 9, 2022.

Can't stop him, can only hope to contain him! Minnesota has all hands on deck trying to deter reigning NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who instead takes only a few motions to gather, hang & hammer home his own miss.

Luka Dončić coming off of a pick-and-roll is the last thing you want to see when playing the Dallas Mavericks. In a play typically saved for All-Star weekend, Dončić freezes the defense with a behind-the-back combo straight into a cross-court pass, finding Kristaps Porzingis for a crucial three-pointer on the left wing. Dončić led the way with 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds during the Mavericks’ 116-106 triumph over the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2021.

Ja Morant has a different relationship with gravity than the rest of us. The ultra springy Memphis Grizzlies guard chases down Denver Nuggets wing Will Barton in transition then bats his layup attempt off the backboard on April 19, 2021.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

Every legend has its first triumph. Down two points with a single second on the game clock in a pivotal playoff matchup, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard curls hard around a screen to catch an inbound pass deep on the perimeter, pulls up and buries a high-arcing, side-gliding triple. The game-winning three on May 2, 2014 sealed the first-round series in six games, avoiding a dreaded do-or-die battle on Houston Rockets soil.

The Charlotte Hornets guard loses his defender with the very real threat of a cross-court pass, then attacks the hoop and switches hands mid-layup around Atlanta Hawks rim protector Clint Capela. Ball dropped 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists - his first career triple-double - in the January 9, 2021 contest.

Can you even call it a heat check when the temperature is always through the roof? Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry continues to redefine what’s possible from beyond the arc – and on the dance floor – pulling up from the logo for a forty-footer three seconds into the shot clock in a February 6, 2021 tilt against the Dallas Mavericks. The icon finished with 11 triples and 57 total points on the night.

Donovan Mitchell already looks right at home with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After five offensively-explosive seasons with the Utah Jazz — the last three of those warranting All-Star selections — Mitchell has taken his talent eastward, and early returns are extremely promising. Mitchell nonchalantly wills his way past the entire Toronto Raptors defense into the lane before firing a last-second pass into the corner for an awaiting Dean Wade, who buries the open triple.
