Amidst all of the excitement surrounding perhaps the most highly-anticipated NBA rookie season post-2003, Victor Wembanyama, in short time, has already become a man of many nicknames, adjectives, and superlatives. The future is now for Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic. With one of the strongest offensive rookie campaigns in the last decade, Banchero showed why he was worthy of the number one draft pick all season long. A disruptor on both ends of the court against the Indiana Pacers, Banchero first cut off a passing lane by intercepting the ball before running a 2-on-1 break with Franz Wagner, one of two top-10 Orlando picks from 2021. Banchero tallied a team-high 23 points — along with three rebounds, four assists and two steals — in leading the Magic to a 126-120 win on January 25, 2023. A First Team All-Rookie selection, Banchero averaged 20.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game to become Orlando’s first Rookie of the Year recipient since the 2000-01 season.

Though celebrated widely for his combination of size and court vision, don’t underestimate Cade Cunningham’s command of the rock. Surrounded by teammates unafraid to push the pace in transition, the 20-year-old Detroit Pistons point forward calls for an outlet pass in the backcourt then laces a one-handed bounce pass up the floor to a streaking Saddiq Bey for two. Cunningham finished the January 30, 2022 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals.

Luka Dončić is a talent so unique that even his triple-doubles make history. The four-time All-Star scored six points in the final 15 seconds of regulation, including an acrobatic and-1 putback followed by a purposely missed free throw that he corralled and turned into a circus shot that forced overtime with one second left. Dončić then scored seven of 11 overtime points, the highlight being a smooth fadeaway over Julius Randle that gave him 60 points on 21 of 31 from the field to pair with 21 rebounds and 10 assists. The 60 points were a Dallas Mavericks franchise record, and Dončić’s seventh triple-double of the season was the first 60-20-10 one in league history in the thrilling 126-121 victory over the New York Knicks on December 27, 2022.

Match LeBron James and the Golden State Warriors on the floor together, and be prepared for unlimited fireworks. Amped up for a “Rivals Week” duel against his storied rival, the 20-year veteran turned back the clock as only he could. Somehow finding a record he hadn’t broken just yet, the Los Angeles Lakers star pivoted into postseason form early, turning in 36 points, his career’s first-ever 20-rebound game, 12 assists, and a pair of 3-pointers. Fighting off the fatigue of a double overtime slugfest, James summoned the energy needed to guarantee a victory, scoring or assisting on 19 of the Lakers’ 27 points in overtime, fueling a win in one of the 2023-24 season’s most competitive battles.

The LeBron James-Dwyane Wade connection is one of the most devastating duos you’ll ever see in transition. LeBron finds Wade streaking on the break, sprints down court and slams home a return feed from Wade, off the glass, with an incredible left-handed flush. LeBron finished with 19 points, eight boards and four dimes in Miami’s 101-95 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on December 25, 2013.

On the same night he was named on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James found himself with the perfect opportunity to ice the game for his team with one final shot. James takes his time on the mismatch and knocks down a textbook fadeaway jumper over two defenders for the win. It was a storybook ending for Team LeBron in his adopted hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. James finished with 24 points, eight assists, six rebounds and the game-winning J to defeat Team Durant and move to 5-0 as an All-Star captain on February 20, 2022.

When LeBron James hits the open court, the world stops and watches. In a December 23, 2005 matchup against the Indiana Pacers, the third-year Cleveland Cavaliers forward chases down a stolen ball, crosses halfcourt all alone and explodes for a two-handed, windmill reverse slam. James logged 14 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in the win.

After 18 years of watching him make it look easy, you’d think it would get old watching LeBron James take off with an open lane to the basket. James catches an outlet pass from Nikola Jokić then hovers through the paint for a double-clutch reverse slam in the NBA All-Star Game on March 7, 2021.

LeBron James can turn nothing into something with the flip of a switch. With a full head of steam, James makes a quick cross around one defender, then ducks into the paint and reaches back for an incredible, one-handed power dunk over Jaren Jackson Jr. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar was fully locked in with a game-high 35 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a January 9, 2022 matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Kevin Durant’s much-anticipated Phoenix Suns debut was well worth the three-week wait. The 13-time All-Star fit in seamlessly with his new teammates as he makes an impact on both ends — first blocking a Mark Williams’ shot on the low block before burying a catch-and-shoot triple off a feed from Devin Booker on the ensuing possession. Durant 23 points on 10 for 15 shooting to go with six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in Phoenix’s 105-91 road victory over the Charlotte Hornets on March 1, 2023.

As predictably as the rising sun, Los Angeles Lakers megastar Magic Johnson saved his best for the Boston Celtics. Down by a single point in the final seconds of a 1987 NBA Finals rematch on December 11, 1987, Johnson knew exactly where he needed to catch the rock out of an inbound scheme in order to silence his long-time rivals. Cutting backdoor against a defender on the perimeter, the 6-foot-9 legend corrals an inbound pass in stride, leaps off one leg and buries a go-ahead bucket off glass. For Johnson, it was two points in an 18-point, eight-rebound, 17-assist masterpiece, a regular-season triumph worth a celebratory walk-off; for his cross-country foes, a stark reminder of the purple and gold dynasty that dominated so much of the previous decade.

With his above-the-rim abilities and breathtaking athleticism, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has become a walking highlight. Here, Morant adds to that reel, leaping to snag a 94-foot inbound pass from the other side of the court and draining a buzzer-beating alley-oop jumpshot all in one motion. That was one of many plays Morant made, as he burned the San Antonio Spurs for a franchise-record 52 points and seven rebounds in a 118-105 win on February 28, 2022.

A nightmare to defend on offense, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is also capable of taking on the game’s brightest perimeter stars on the other end as well. Motivated to perform against the NBA’s then-reigning champions, Thompson takes on the tough task of checking Milwaukee Bucks All-Star Khris Middleton, sticking to his hip on a hesitation dribble before keeping pace and swatting away a layup attempt. Thompson was in postseason form early, putting together a scorching-hot 38-point, six-rebound, five-assist night along with eight three-pointers, a steal and a block in the 122-109 win on March 12, 2022.

When he’s in the zone, Kevin Durant isn’t just a threat — he’s unguardable. The Brooklyn Nets superstar works his way through the Detroit Pistons defense from the perimeter through the key and to the hoop for an up-and-under reverse layup that banks in off the glass. The basket counted for two of Durant’s 51 points, marking it as an NBA season high at the time on December 12, 2021.

At the heart of the Brooklyn Nets’ unforgettable push to contend for a title is nine-time All-Star and franchise catalyst Kevin Durant. Durant runs the floor as his teammates work in masterful lockstep to recover a steal against the Cleveland Cavaliers then rises up to throw down an off-glass alley-oop from teammate Mike James. Durant finished the May 16, 2021 contest with 23 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists.

One surefire way to know you’ve got a talented prospect on your hands? They don’t shy away from battles against the game’s biggest stars. Creating a switch in a pick-and-roll, Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham works his handle, taking the league’s reigning MVP for a ride with a sharp behind-the-back before finishing the play with a three-point bucket. Against a top-tier Denver Nuggets team, Cunningham showed why he was the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, finishing with 34 points on 14-of-26 shooting, adding eight rebounds, eight assists, four blocks and two steals on January 25, 2022.

There are great three-point performances, and then there’s what Stephen Curry did at the 2022 All-Star Game. Sneaking across the floor to the right corner, the Golden State Warriors star catches a pass and lines himself up for a triple, turning around to play the crowd before the ball even sinks through the net. Curry provided countless highlights in Team LeBron’s 163-160 win over Team Durant, dropping in 50 points and 16 three-pointers to take home All-Star MVP honors on February 20, 2022. 

In his legendary Hall of Fame career, everything Magic Johnson touched exhibited greatness. Making even the most impossible plays seem effortless, Johnson grabs a rebound against the Denver Nuggets in Game 1 of the First Round, then fires a one-handed Hail Mary-style heave the full length of the court, hitting nothing but net. Even in his eighth season, the 12-time All-Star and five-time champion still had the ability to wow everyone in attendance, finishing the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff-opener with 16 points, seven rebounds and 14 assists in a 128-95 victory on April 23, 1987.

It’s Year 15 and Kevin Durant can still make jaws hit the floor with his ability to dominate a basketball game. The Orlando Magic were the 12-time All-Star’s latest victim, as Durant picks them apart in a variety of ways — on offense, he reaches into his bag of tricks for a one-handed floater off the glass, a spot-up triple, a dribble-drive into a baseline fall-away jumper and an open mid-range shot off a behind-the-back maneuver. The two-time champion and Finals MVP comes up big on the defensive end as well, turning a rebound into a long outlet dish to Joe Harris while also blocking a shot and picking Franz Wagner’s pocket at halfcourt en route to a slam. When it was over, Durant lit Orlando up for 45 points on 19-of-24 shooting while also chipping in seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-102 win on November 28, 2022. 

No matter the city, matchup or scenario, you can pencil in Luka Dončić as a guaranteed bucket. Hanging back in transition, the Dallas Mavericks star shows off his shooting touch in the All-Star Game, calmly draining a catch-and-shoot triple in traffic. Dončić chipped in eight points, three rebounds and two triples in Team LeBron’s 163-160 win on February 20, 2022.

Although there are plenty of new faces on the Utah Jazz, Lauri Markkanen and his teammates look like they have been playing together for years. Markkanen makes an impact right away with his new squad following a season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, taking a pass in the corner, where he’s immediately confronted by two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Thinking quickly on his feet, Markkanen fires a one-handed missile into the other corner, where fellow new arrival Collin Sexton is waiting to drain the triple. The Finnish big man contributed 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, kicking off a new era of Jazz basketball with a 123-102 rout of the Denver Nuggets on October 19, 2022.

Luka Dončić only played three quarters, so he made sure to announce his presence loud and with authority. The Portland Trail Blazers have no defensive solutions for the Dallas Mavericks superstar, who pump fakes a defender out of his sneakers and fools another with a head fake while driving strong to the rim before elevating for a massive one-handed slam. Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, Dončić dropped 33 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five triples in his squad’s 130-110 victory on December 16, 2022.

One of the game’s great competitors, there’s no challenge too lofty for Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard. Rotating over to tag a rolling Chicago Bulls big with a major size advantage, Lillard goes vertical, meeting him at the summit for a gritty block. The six-time All-Star brought the magic on both ends, including late-game buckets to help knock off the red-hot Bulls for a 112-107 win on November 17, 2021. In all, he finished with 22 points, 10 assists, four rebounds, three three-pointers, a steal and a block.

When Luka Dončić sets out with his mind set on scoring, there isn’t a defensive scheme capable of getting into his way. Dribbling down court with just five seconds remaining, Dončić moves through an obstacle course of Golden State Warriors defenders with behind-the-backs and spins before easing into his shooting motion to calmly drain a 32-foot triple to beat the buzzer. In their first Western Conference Finals appearance since 2011, Dončić put on a show for the Dallas Mavericks home crowd, finishing with 40 points, 11 rebounds, four triples, three assists and two blocks on May 22, 2022.

Whenever Dwyane Wade is afforded the luxury of having options on the fast break, it doesn’t usually end well for the opposing team. Wade receives a lead pass from LeBron James and lofts a no-look, over the head lob back to James for the monster alley-oop. The Miami Heat legend shared a game-high seven dimes as the Heat went on to a 101-95 road victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 25, 2013.

Anthony Edwards has wasted no time churning out memorable plays in his rookie season. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard takes his man off the dribble out at the three-point line, attacks baseline, then practically jumps over a help-side defender scrambling to draw a charge en route to a massive slam against the Portland Trail Blazers on January 7, 2021.

It takes little more than a few dribbles for Giannis Antetokounmpo to cover the length of the floor. The Milwaukee Bucks star pushes the ball ahead with a couple of bounces, then utilizes his tremendous wingspan to throw down a one-handed jam from a step inside the free-throw line. The six-time All-Star and member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team was magnificent in Team LeBron’s 163-160 victory over Team Durant on February 20, 2022, finishing with 30 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

Kawhi Leonard’s return to the lineup following a two-week absence was just what the doctor ordered for the LA Clippers. After tying the tight battle at 117 on the prior play, the two-time champion and Finals MVP stuck a dagger in the Charlotte Hornets on his squad’s next possession. Leonard grabs an inbound pass on the wing before taking one dribble and draining a step-back jumper over the outstretched fingertips of Jalen McDaniels. The always-clutch five-time All-Star tallied 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in the Clippers’ 119-117 win on December 5, 2022.

With his 6-foot-11 frame and impeccable vision, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić sees everything on the basketball court. That includes the defensive end, where the 2020-21 NBA MVP shows brilliance rotating over for a game-winning, no-look block in a 95-94 win over the Houston Rockets. The Joker did it all on both ends, contributing 28 points and 14 rebounds in the victory on November 6, 2021.

If DeMar DeRozan’s in the zone, you ought to just sit back, relax and watch him work. In a showdown versus his former squad, the Chicago Bulls star sizes up with a couple of dribbles into a crossover, pulls off a baby Shammgod, then rises up for a powerful, one-handed slam over Jakob Poeltl. DeRozan was unstoppable in a 120-109 win over the San Antonio Spurs on February 14, 2022, finishing with a game-high 40 points, seven assists and three rebounds.

In yet another display of unfathomable scoring ability, the Phoenix Suns superstar absolutely torches the Chicago Bulls in every possible way — on dribble drive layups and pull-up jumpers, stepback and spot-up three-pointers, post-up fadeaways and a steal that becomes a coast-to-coast throwdown, just to name a few. When the third quarter was finished, Booker had accumulated 51 points on 20-of-25 from the field and 6-for-7 from downtown, pairing that with four rebounds, six assists and a steal in 31 minutes in Phoenix’s 132-113 runaway victory on November 30, 2022.

A year after his brilliant first campaign earned him NBA Rookie of the Year honors, versatile Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes is back for more, much to the chagrin of two unfortunate Chicago Bulls defenders. After backing Alex Caruso down toward the post, Barnes motors his way into the paint and puts Nikola Vučević on a poster with an authoritative one-handed tomahawk jam. The Bulls won the battle but Barnes’ dunk reverberated long after the November 7, 2022 matchup had ended.

Give Vince Carter enough clearance to reach full altitude and it doesn’t even matter who you throw out there to protect the rim. After gathering a loose ball with a smooth behind-the-back dribble, the high-flying New Jersey Nets swingman heads straight to the bucket, bounces off iconic Miami Heat shot blocker Alonzo Mourning and still manages to throw down an instant classic dunk of the year candidate. Carter finished with 32 points and the latest entry in a rich portfolio of unforgettable dunks in the November 7, 2005 contest.

If it has anything to do with defensive intensity, you better believe Jalen Suggs is up to the challenge. Keeping eyes on a Philadelphia 76ers scorer entering his vicinity, the talented Orlando Magic guard sneaks off of his assignment flying in for a surprise rejection before channeling more energy to score on the other end with a fastbreak layup. Suggs’ efforts were showcased in the box score of the March 13, 2022 contest, as he tallied up 10 points, five rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block.

Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokić needs only a quick moment to make a play - if you take your eyes off of him for one second, he’ll make you pay. Jokić makes a full pivot on the perimeter, then stops and spots a cutting LeBron James for a reverse, alley-oop flush. In his fourth All-Star appearance, Jokić had an impressive line of 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in Team LeBron’s 163-160 win over Team Durant on February 20, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell already looks right at home with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After five offensively-explosive seasons with the Utah Jazz — the last three of those warranting All-Star selections — Mitchell has taken his talent eastward, and early returns are extremely promising. Mitchell nonchalantly wills his way past the entire Toronto Raptors defense into the lane before firing a last-second pass into the corner for an awaiting Dean Wade, who buries the open triple. Despite falling in a close game, Mitchell aced his first Cleveland test with 31 points, two rebounds, nine assists and two steals on October 19, 2022.

With one of the NBA’s smoothest handles, there are few defenses Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić can’t free himself of. With two Philadelphia 76ers to his left, Dončić shifts right with a quick between-the-legs move, creating a runway for a highlight flush in traffic. Dončić's box score told a similar story with 33 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists and two steals in a 107-98 win on February 4, 2022.

With the All-Star Game in his town, it was only right that Darius Garland provided a few highlights for the crowd. Showing off his court vision, Garland surveys the field before finding teammate Jarrett Allen on a sweet lob dish to set up a jam. The Cleveland Cavaliers guard proved victorious in his All-Star debut, helping Team LeBron to a 163-160 win with 13 points, three assists, three triples and two steals on February 20, 2022.

The legend of Jayson Tatum continues to grow. Now in his sixth season, the reigning All-NBA First Team selection leaves little doubt that he was born for the biggest moments. With his Boston Celtics facing a two-point deficit in the final seconds of a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Tatum showcases the ice in his veins when he takes a bounce pass from Marcus Smart and drives into the lane with one goal in mind — tie the game. Tatum does just that, throwing down an emphatic slam over Jarrett Allen with 6.7 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Tatum finished the November 2, 2022 contest with 26 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four blocks.
